The Strawberry Line's latest extension, encompassing areas near Wells and Dulcote, is enjoying a surge in popularity, with significant numbers of locals embracing the new walking and cycling route.
The Dulcote path, in particular, has seen a remarkable influx of around 25,000 users over the past year. This section of the Strawberry Line not only provides a direct and safe route to the Charlie Bigham's factory site from Wells but also offers a serene gateway to the countryside from the city.
In Shepton Mallet, the Shape campus section of the Strawberry Line is witnessing a similar trend in popularity. This segment, which safely guides pedestrians and cyclists under the busy A371, has been attracting over 100,000 users annually. The remarkable usage demonstrates the community's appreciation for well-designed, safe outdoor spaces.
Another commendable stretch is the Westbury sub-Mendip path, a 1.5-mile stretch that has recorded an average of 90 daily visits since its opening in September. This path offers a safe, traffic-free connection between Westbury and Easton, catering to various needs like family visits, shopping, dining, and recreational activities.
Mick Fletcher, Chair of the Strawberry Line Society, is heartened by these figures. He asserts that a continuous off-road path linking local communities would greatly benefit Somerset, echoing the success of the established Strawberry Line path in North Somerset. He anticipates even higher user numbers as plans to connect the path to Wells and onwards to Cheddar progress.
The society is also seeking community feedback on the older sections between Yatton and Cheddar to enhance the path's experience. Through their ongoing survey, they aim to gather insights that will help in further developing this vital community asset. The Strawberry Line's success in Wells, Dulcote, and Shepton Mallet highlights the positive impact that such initiatives can have, not only in promoting outdoor activities but also in fostering community spirit and connectivity.
