Wells drivers get say on 40mph plans near Whitnell Corner
By Laura Linham 4th Nov 2026
Somerset Council is asking drivers and residents to comment on proposed 40mph speed limits on roads approaching the new Whitnell Corner roundabout near Wells.
The order would cover a 600-metre stretch of Bath Road, the B3139, and 600 metres of Wells Hill Bottom, the B3135. The council says the lower limits would reduce approach speeds and help make the new junction safer.
The proposal applies to roads in the parishes of St Cuthbert Out and Emborough, just outside Wells. The council's notice was published on Wednesday, 4 November, and says comments or objections must be received within 21 days. The deadline is Wednesday, 25 November.
Anyone wishing to comment should write to Somerset Council, explain their grounds and quote reference KT21102026. The council says names and addresses may be made public as part of its consideration of responses.
Whitnell Corner is where Bath Road meets Wells Hill Bottom. Somerset Council has said the junction has seen 67 collisions over 20 years, including 15 serious incidents and one fatality in 2019. Work to replace the junction with a roundabout began this year.
