Wells City Council's Neighbourhood Plan group has put forward a series of proposals aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving pedestrian safety in the city centre.

The suggestions were discussed at a working group meeting earlier this month and will be brought to the Full Council in October for approval.

Several key changes are being discussed, including moving the bus stop from the busy Sadler Street/High Street junction to the Coach drop-off bay, freeing up the junction and making it easier for buses to manoeuvre.

The plan also calls for a new pedestrian crossing at the current bus stop location and another on Princes Road between the Bus Station and Tesco to make the area safer for foot traffic.

Councillors are also asking for a review of the city's Traffic Order, which currently allows disabled drivers to park in loading bays, reducing space for deliveries.

"These are just the first steps," said Cllr Powell, who noted that the working group is looking to develop a wider traffic strategy by May next year. "We want to ensure Wells is a safer and more accessible place for everyone."

The proposals will be discussed at the next Full Council meeting in October, followed by a request for funding at the Finance Committee. If approved, residents could see changes taking shape as early as 2025.
