Wells could ban off-lead dogs from Cathedral Green
By Laura Linham 21st Oct 2026
Dogs could be barred from roaming off-lead on Cathedral Green under proposals facing Wells councillors tomorrow. The restrictions would apply all year and extend to multi-use games areas.
But the council's own report raises questions about the evidence. Feedback has mainly concerned Cathedral Green, coming from one or two sources, and no wider community consultation has taken place.
The report cites concerns about loose dogs around children playing sport and people with limited mobility. Councillors could instead retain existing rules, which require leads when an authorised officer gives a direction.
Wells City Council will decide whether to request the restrictions on Thursday, 22 October. Somerset Council would then consider the request; no new rules have been approved.
