Stoberry Park School in Wells has issued a statement to parents in response to the government's announcement that all schools in the UK will close from the end of this week.

Prime Minster Boris Johnson announced that all schools will be closed until further notice, once they close their gates on Friday.

The exception will be that education will continue for children of key workers, such as police officers, and vulnerable children.

Exams will not take place in May and June, and GCSE and A-level students will receive qualifications in time, though the details of this are yet to be announced.

An email to Stoberry Park School parents from head teacher Michael Hawkins said: "You may have seen that schools will be closed from Friday.

"There are specific protected workers and children who we will need to make a provision for.

"We thought this could be the case and have started developing plans which will enable us to help, where parents are in front line posts and also for our very vulnerable pupils.

"I cannot give you any further information as details are not currently in place but we will spend the next two days building a strategy.

"Although not unexpected, it is still a concern to us all. We have all worked so hard to maintain our provision in a very uncertain climate and I would like to sincerely thank our wonderful staff together with parents who have offered their support and thanks for the way the school has continued to function and provide information."
