The Wells Community Shed (WCS) has found a new location after being told it must leave its current premises at Heads Up by the end of April.

For over six years, WCS has provided a safe and social space, particularly for older men, to meet and work on craft projects at the Heads Up site in South Horrington. However, in November, the mental health charity informed WCS that it needed the space for its own expanding services, and trustees officially gave three months' notice at the end of January.

The WCS will now be relocating to a building in Launcherley, near Wells.

Steve Whitby, one of the volunteers running the Shed, said members were relieved and grateful to have found a new base.

The Shed first opened in 2018, with woodworking at the heart of its activities. Members have made bird tables, hedgehog boxes, and restored garden benches, including several for The Bishop's Palace. The most recent repaired bench was delivered in February.

Membership has steadily grown over the years, with both men and women taking part, and a waiting list for new members. The hope is that, once settled in Launcherley, WCS may be able to open more frequently than its current two mornings a week.

For now, attention has turned to the costs of moving, and WCS is looking for grants and businesses that might be able to assist with the relocation. Any surplus equipment will likely be donated to other local groups.

WCS is also working to arrange transport for members, with plans to set up car groups and volunteer drivers to help people travel between Wells and Launcherley.

Anyone who can offer help is encouraged to contact Steve Whitby at [email protected] or call 07468 317217.
