Goals from Craig Herrod and Harry Foster were not enough as Wells City lost out 3-2 away to Hengrove Athletic at the weekend.

The first action came on five minutes when a Tom Hill throughball set Harvey Hadrill free and one on one with the keeper but Bush came out on top with a fine save low to his left.

Wells opened the scoring on seven minutes when Ross McErlain played a long ball forward that Hadrill flicked on to Foster, who cutthe ball back to Herrod to spin his marker before an accurate finish into the far bottom corner.

On 10 minutes a Hengrove free kick on edge of box only just evaded the top corner.

After 13 minutes Alex Camm fed Foster who passed first time to Hadrill, who then out muscled two defenders before finding Herrod but his effort was well saved.

Hengrove equalised on 15 minutes when good link up play by Hengrove's forwards saw Pete Sheppard play a delightful reverse pass which dissected the Wells defence before Adrian Thompson put Harley Wilkinson on the floor and passed into an open goal.

Their second came only four minutes later when a Hengrove corner was only half cleared by Wells and the smallest player on the pitch Sheppard smashed a half volley into the far corner.

Hengrove extended their lead on 26 minutes with long ball into the box which saw Wilkinson caught in no man's land and Sam Payne lifted the ball over him from 12 yards with a looping header.

On 30 minutes a long shot from Camm narrowly went over the bar and five minutes later Kieran Davis did well to evade two challenges before letting fly from the edge of the box but his effort again went narrowly over.

Just before half-time, Foster was played through on goal from McErlain and just before he got into the box he was cynically fouled by the last defender but astonishingly the ref only cautioned the defender, leaving the score Hengrove 3 - 1 Wells City at the break.

After 58 minutes Foster went one on one with Bush but again the keeper thwartsed the Wells attack with another great save.

Wells pulled a goal back on 66 minutes when Herrod made a brilliant cross and Foster reacted quickest to volley the ball in off the post from eight yards.

On 77 minutes Hengroved score through Mancini but the linesman adjudges him offside and the goal did not stand.

In the final minute, a great through all by Dale Hunt saw Herrod go one on one with Bush from a slight angle but his low drive was comfortably saved and Hengrove held out for an unlikely three points.

Wells didn't play well and will have to show a lot more in their remaining games if they are to maintain their challenge of a top four finish.

Next up they host Bridgwater tonight (March 10) in the quarter final of the Premier Cup before they host Corsham in the league on Saturday (March 14).
