Residents of Wells will notice a slight uptick in their council tax bills for the 2024/25 financial year, following a decision by city councillors to adjust the precept—a move aimed at bolstering the town's preparedness for the handover of services from Somerset Council and enhancing youth-oriented programs.

The council has resolved to increase the precept by 2.54% as of April, a strategic step to ensure financial readiness for the anticipated devolution of services.

Integral to this financial planning is a significant boost to the contingency fund, now set at £100,000.

This reserve is specifically designated for managing the transition of services to local control, with strict access protocols in place.

The budget also earmarks £15,000 for youth initiatives, addressing the needs of the city's youth, ensuring they have the support and resources necessary for their growth and development.
