Wells Cathedral unveils festive calendar for Advent and Christmas
Wells Cathedral is inviting locals and visitors to celebrate the season of Advent and Christmas with a packed programme of services, concerts, and family-friendly events.
The historic Cathedral, adorned with seasonal decorations, will host everything from traditional carol services to creative workshops, offering something for all ages this festive season.
The Cathedral's Advent and Christmas services form the heart of the celebrations, with highlights including Carols by Candlelight on 19–21 December and the Cathedral Carol Services on 23 and 24 December. Visitors are also encouraged to dedicate a candle for a loved one, with sponsorships supporting the concerts and including an option to have personalised messages printed in the event programme.
The festive calendar boasts a variety of concerts and events, including Vivaldi's Four Seasons by Candlelight, a performance of A Christmas Carol, and Christmas at the Movies. Other highlights include the Somerset County Schools' Celebration, AGE UK Somerset Carol Service, and the Women's Institute Carol Service.
Families will find plenty to enjoy, including a Christmas Story Trail, a Family Sing-Along with the Wells Cathedral Song Squad on 22 December, and a festive foliage workshop where children can create seasonal decorations using natural materials from the Cathedral gardens. Crib Services on Christmas Eve encourage children to dress up, adding a playful and inclusive touch to the celebrations.
The Cathedral Shop is offering 10% discounts on Wednesdays in the lead-up to Christmas, and the award-winning Loft Café is serving seasonal treats and winter warmers. As part of the Cathedral's Warm Spaces initiative, the café is offering free teas and coffees for visitors who need to stay warm, with a suggested donation to support others in the community.
Visitors can also support or make use of the Warm Rail, which provides free winter clothing next to the Cathedral Shop. Contributions of clean, warm garments are welcome to help those in need this winter.
For those looking to extend their festive celebrations, Wells Cathedral remains open to visitors daily, including Boxing Day and New Year's Day. January events include promenade concerts and Britten's A Ceremony of Carols on 2 February, performed by the Wells Cathedral Choristers.
Tickets for concerts and events are available via the Cathedral's website or directly at the Cathedral Shop. Visitors are encouraged to check the Cathedral's website for the latest details on opening times and seasonal activities.
