Wells Cathedral has been named the UK's most photographed building at night. This accolade comes from a comprehensive analysis conducted by BuildWorld, which delved into the metadata of over 10 million photos on Flickr to identify the nation's favourite architectural subjects after dark.
The research involved examining 6,000 of the world's most iconic buildings, ranking them based on the number of photos tagged "night" per 1,000 photos of each building on the site. Wells Cathedral emerged at the top of the UK list, with 142 out of every 1,000 photos taken at night, surpassing even renowned landmarks like Big Ben and St Paul's Cathedral.
According to BuildWorld's findings, the UK's top ten most photographed buildings at night are a blend of historical and modern architecture. The list includes:
- Wells Cathedral (142 per 1,000)
- Big Ben (138 per 1,000)
- Royal Albert Hall (126 per 1,000)
- St Paul's Cathedral (109 per 1,000)
- Royal Albert Dock, Liverpool (100 per 1,000)
- Royal Pavilion (88 per 1,000)
- The Shard (85 per 1,000)
- King's College Chapel (78 per 1,000)
- Sage Gateshead (77 per 1,000)
- Shakespeare's Globe (74 per 1,000)
BuildWorld commented on the results: "Most of the UK's night-time superstars were originally built centuries ago. They have taken on new nocturnal life as electric up-lighting highlights the detail of their gothic, baroque or Victorian styles."
Wells Cathedral, a marvel of architectural history, began its construction in 1175. Today, it stands majestically against the night sky, illuminated by modern lighting that accentuates its Gothic design. The cathedral's website notes that Bishop Reginald de Bohun introduced the revolutionary Gothic style to England, making Wells the first English cathedral built entirely in this manner.
The first construction phase of Wells Cathedral spanned about eighty years, culminating in the magnificent West Front. Remarkably, about 300 of its original medieval statues remain, forming a grand, stone backdrop for various events and processions.
