Wells Cathedral launches £1,500 Advent carol contest
By Laura Linham 12th May 2026
Wells Cathedral is launching a competition for a new Advent carol composition.
Composers of all ages will be invited to submit a new choral work for an unaccompanied SATB choir, setting a text suitable for an Advent Sunday service.
The winning composer will receive £1,500.
Their piece will also be premiered by Wells Cathedral Choir during the cathedral's traditional Advent Procession in November.
The competition will be free to enter.
It has been funded by Cathedral Commissions, a scheme run on behalf of Wells Cathedral to support new music and help secure the future of cathedral composition.
The scheme has already funded dozens of new choral works.
Composers supported through Cathedral Commissions include Jonathan Dove, Gabriel Jackson, Kerensa Briggs, Sir James MacMillan, Cheryl Frances-Hoad and Cecilia McDowall.
Entries will be judged by composers Joanna March and Owain Park, alongside Timothy Parsons, Wells Cathedral's Director of Music, and Carolyn Craig, Assistant Director of Music.
The cathedral has not yet provided the opening date or deadline for entries.
