Wells business community tackles shoplifting with digital vigilance

In an effort to clamp down on shoplifting in the city, Wells businesses have banded together, creating a robust WhatsApp group now boasting over 220 members.

This digital alliance allows local businesses to swiftly alert one another about suspected shoplifters by sharing images and video footage in real-time.

Shop windows and market stalls across Wells now feature stickers warning, "Shoplifters beware. We'll all know you!"

These stickers, which are funded by the Wells Chamber of Commerce, form part of a wider anti-crime initiative aimed at reinforcing the safety of local businesses.

A police spokesperson said: " The Wells Neighbourhood Police Team is collaborating with local retailers to enhance our partnerships, boost the reporting of thefts, and explore strategies to curb shoplifting We are also intensifying our focus on the most frequent offenders."

In a recent council meeting, Wells city councillors discussed strategies to enhance security and deter crime, with. Councillor Louis Agabani - who is also the head of the Wells Chamber of Commerce, suggested a Neighbourhood Watch scheme tailored explicitly for the High Street environment.
