Students at the Blue School in Wells are celebrating their A-level results.

Almost half of all grades were at the highest A* or A grade, a figure that is likely to be nearly double the national achievement rate.

More than 80 per cent of entries were achieved at grades A* to C. With more than 300 exam entries at the largest school sixth form in Somerset, this translates to a huge number of students who have given themselves the best opportunity for the future.

Last year's results placed the school among the highest achieving of any institution across the South West. It is likely that these results with be at a similarly high level.

Head teacher, Mark Woodlock, said: "We are absolutely delighted that the hard work and application of our students has paid off for them with such exceptional results.

"These results illustrate the talent that the students possess, the excellence of the teaching they have experienced and the strength of the relationships that have been built within the school.

"These results are the product of our educational and local community, of which we consider ourselves a key part.

"We thank all of those who have supported these students during their time at school. We believe that our community should be justifiably proud of its students and of the school that serves Wells and the surrounding area."

The vast majority of students have achieved their first choice university place or are able to embark upon their chosen career path.

These include numerous places at the strongest universities across the country, including Oxford and Cambridge, and a wide range of courses and careers.

Bridget Cox, assistant headteacher responsible for the Sixth Form, said: "I am extremely proud of the achievements of all of our students.

"We consider it our mission to provide our students with the best opportunities for the next steps in their education and careers.

"This group of young people have amply demonstrated their academic ability, complementing the positive role models that we know they have become."
