Jack Eyers, a former Wells Blue School pupil, has secured a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, narrowly missing out on gold.

The 28-year-old, who now resides in Dorset, finished just 0.38 seconds behind Ukraine's Vladyslav Yepifanov in the Men's Va'a Single 200m event.

Eyers' second-place finish adds to an impressive list of achievements. He is a two-time world champion and has previously won a European championship. Reflecting on his accomplishment, he said, "I'm so proud, so happy, a dream come true." Eyers attributed his success to hard work over the past year, especially in improving his handling of the boat in challenging conditions.

He explained, "The last 12 months I've been working on exposing myself to these sorts of conditions, and the hard work's paid off."

Allen Westerby from Poole Harbour Canoe Club praised Jack's performance, saying, "It was a very good race, and he was beaten narrowly by a competitor who set a games record for the race. As a club, we are so pleased with his performance."

Eyers first started competing internationally in 2018, winning bronze at the World and European Championships. His career has seen him triumph in various disciplines, including wheelchair basketball, rowing, and athletics, before settling on canoeing.

Beyond his sporting success, Eyers made headlines in 2017 when he became the first amputee to be crowned Mr England. Born with a foreshortened leg, he faced significant challenges growing up. At 17, he made the decision to have part of his leg amputated to improve mobility, choosing a prosthetic with a distinctive design.

Eyers' journey has inspired many. From his early days with Burcott Riding for the Disabled to his role as a personal trainer, he continues to motivate others with his determination and resilience. He is also involved in Models of Diversity, a campaign against discrimination in the modelling industry.

Next year, Eyers will compete in Mr World, flying to China to take part. As he reflects on his Paralympic success, he plans to commemorate the event with a tattoo, though he admits, "I haven't finalised any designs yet. I also don't want to say too much because my parents might tell me not to do it. I'd rather turn up with it."

Eyers' achievements both on and off the water stand as a testament to his strength, determination, and drive. His journey from Wells to the world stage continues to inspire.
