Wells air cadets seek new volunteer as long-serving officer retires

Wells Air Cadets are on the lookout for a new volunteer to help lead their squadron, as long-serving Flight Lieutenant John Blackburn retires after 24 years.
The appeal comes from newly appointed commanding officer Tom Henson, who took on the role earlier this year at the age of just 23. A former cadet himself, Tom says the experience changed the course of his life — helping him gain an apprenticeship with aerospace giant BAE and leading to a skilled role in aviation software.
"I have enjoyed being a cadet since the age of 12," he said. "It takes you out of your comfort zone and fulfils your potential."
Tom is now hoping someone will step forward to help him run the squadron, continuing its legacy of developing local young people's skills and confidence.
Among the current cadets is Iris, a final-year student at the Blue School, who says the group has boosted her leadership skills and sense of community.
"Being a Wells air cadet has developed my confidence in a very welcoming, encouraging environment," she said. "My aim now is to join the RAF."
John Blackburn, who is retiring from the squadron after more than two decades, praised Tom's appointment and said the group needed more support to continue offering positive opportunities to young people in the area.
"Tom is doing a great job," he said. "He's a young and forward-looking person with a great breadth of youth and experience, as our organisation modernises with more use of computers and social media. But he needs help to keep the squadron going for the benefit of our young people. There are already insufficient positive activities for them in Wells."
The squadron is seeking a volunteer with an interest in aviation and a passion for supporting young people. Training and courses are available for new staff, and the role is described as rewarding and flexible.
