Wells' proposed 20mph scheme is being redesigned after councillors raised concerns that roads around the Blue School and nearby residential areas had been left out.

Wells City Council discussed the traffic management proposal earlier this year, with councillors saying they supported action on speeds but wanted the scheme widened and made clearer for drivers.

Minutes of the April meeting show concerns were raised that the proposed limits were not clear enough for motorists. Councillors also said the area around the Blue School, a key school-run location in the city, had not been included.

The roads councillors asked to be reconsidered included Lethbridge Road, Kennion Road, Milton Lane, Ash Lane, College Road, Bath Road and the Morrisons estate.

Councillors also questioned whether widening the scheme would lead to further delays or extra costs. At the May meeting, the town clerk confirmed that the additional roads had been referred to Somerset Council.

The latest update, included in the June papers for Wells City Council, says the redesigned 20mph scheme has now been sent to Somerset. The council has been told there will be a six-to-eight-week design timeline.

The revised scheme is expected to be ready for the September meeting of the council's Outside Spaces Committee. Councillors are also expected to consider the wider traffic management and 20mph proposal in September, according to the council's forward plan.

The same committee was told that an application to the Avon and Somerset Police innovation fund for speed indicator devices had been unsuccessful. Costings for a speed indicator device are now due to be taken to the Finance Committee.

No final decision has yet been made on the redesigned 20mph scheme. Somerset Council will be involved in the next stage before councillors review the updated proposals.
