A popular well has been shut down permanently after years of threats, abuse and dangerous parking pushed its owner to breaking point.

Joel Roberts, who runs Littlewell Farm in Coxley, says he's had enough after being repeatedly targeted by hostile visitors using the roadside water source.

"We've taken the difficult decision to permanently close the well," he said in a no-nonsense statement. "There have been threats of violence, verbal abuse, vandalism and invasions of privacy."

The well, which has served locals for over a century, had become a flashpoint for bad behaviour as visitors blocked the Glastonbury Road, ignored signs and put pedestrians at risk. Roberts said some users even refused to move their cars when asked — then turned aggressive.

'Enough is enough'

The farm, which also operates as a hospitality business, has seen guests and residents caught in the crossfire. Emergency vehicles have struggled to get through, and the narrow bend near a speed limit change has made the area even more dangerous.

"We've always asked people politely to park safely," Roberts said. "But it's got to the point where we can't guarantee anyone's safety — including our own."

The well has now been sealed. Pipes have been installed to keep the spring flowing underground, and the area will be covered with turf or wildflowers.

Roberts said the decision wasn't taken lightly, but stressed that use of the land was always at the owners' discretion.

Alternative water sources available

The White Spring in Glastonbury has been highlighted as a nearby alternative. Any attempt to open a new access point elsewhere would require permission, construction, and regular upkeep.

"We apologise to all the respectful and courteous individuals who may be adversely affected," Roberts added. "But this behaviour has gone too far."
