Volunteering helps Wells Blue School students' medical ambitions

Their ages range from 16 to 94 but all 23 have something in common.

They are volunteer helpers giving their time at Torrwood residential care home in South Horrington.

Two of the youngest are Wells Blue School students who hope to go to university and become doctors.

Sixteen-year-old Emma Bradley entertains the residents by playing her flute and said: "Working here gives me an insight into looking after people."

Seventeen-year-old Matthew Abesamis said: "I come here because it has a very nice atmosphere and I like to help old people.

"Also I will be applying for university in Bristol and this helps with my CV."

They were speaking yesterday afternoon (December 19) at the Christmas get-together for volunteers at Torrwood with tea, coffee and a buffet.

The volunteers help with gardening for the residents, befriend them and support the home's activities organisers.

"Our volunteers contribute immensely to the well-being of our residents," said volunteer co-ordinator Julie Hanks.

"We are very grateful for all they do. If you might be interested in doing some volunteering with us please email me on [email protected]."
