Trespassers film themselves entering and exploring abandoned country house hotel near Wells

A group of 'urban explorers' have got into Ston Easton Park and posted a film online showing the inside of the abandoned hotel.

The almost-hour-long video was posted yesterday (June 6) on TheSecretVault YouTube Channel, which has numerous similar 'urbex' tours of other empty buildings all around the country.

In the video, the group can be seen climbing in through a window of the Grade-I listed mansion which was once the childhood home of North East Somerset MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, and exploring all the rooms - even removing the plug in a bath that was filling up from a dripping tap to prevent water damage.

The footage also shows crockery left on tables, art still hanging on walls, beds made and a rat in the kitchen.

Ston Easton Park closed as a hotel in June 2020. Since then it has lain empty, apart from occasional use as a film location, including for BBC's psychological thriller, Chloe and ITV's Sanditon.

In July last year Mendip District Council granted permission for the mansion to be turned back into residential accommodation (rather than a hotel). It is currently on the market for £6m with Knight Frank.

Nub News was unable to contact the owners of Ston Easton Park directly, but a representative from Knight Frank was able to confirm that the owners were aware of the film, and that it "is now a police matter."

If the offence is trespass then it is a civil offence which means that police do not have the power to arrest anyone. However, if it is deemed that there has been a criminal offence (ie. criminal damage or burglary) then police can investigate.

Avon and Somerset Police have issued the following statement, "We're aware of this video and have been in touch with the owners of the property. As no damage was caused or items taken, it's classified as a civil trespass issue.

"We'll be carrying out some additional patrols of the area as a further deterrence."
