Top award 'slightly embarrasses' volunteer Claire
A founder member of Wells Community Network has been a prestigious award by Somerset County Council.
Claire Chettoe was nominated by Wells Mayor Stewart Cursley for her voluntary work in the community.
"I am honoured but slightly embarrassed," said Claire, "as there are so many people in Wells doing great work."
With Wells Community Network she is one of three leads running its Ukraine Hub for refugees.
Claire is also a trustee with Wells Dementia Action Alliance where she runs their Memory Café, as wells as a volunteer with the Mendip Credit Union and the Children of Chernobyl who are affected by the radiation from 1986's nuclear power station explosion in Ukraine.
"Being a volunteer does not work just one-way," said Claire. "I get so much out of it too through meeting people, learning new skills and keeping my brain active."
These Awards for Service to the Community are made annually by the chair of the county council and this year's ceremony at Taunton Rugby Club was attended by 140 people, including 43 nominees from areas right across Somerset.
The award recipients were nominated by their parish and town councils for recognition of their outstanding contribution to their communities, and were presented with a signed certificate and gift by the Chair of Somerset County Council, Councillor Mike Best, followed by a buffet reception to celebrate their achievements.
"It is one of the best aspects of this role," said Councillor Best, "to be able to hear stories of - and recognise - dedication, hard work and selflessness from Somerset residents, who clearly love and take pride in their communities."
