Major improvements on a busy road in Wells are being planned to take place next month.

The B3139 The Liberty and Tor Street are showing signs of deterioration and have been subject to an increasing number of minor repairs in recent months.

The planned scheme will involve removal of the old road surface, repairs to the kerbs and drainage system, followed by full carriageway resurfacing.

Prep works will take place between Monday February 10 to Friday February 14 with temporary traffic lights in place.

The resurfacing itself requires a road closure to keep the workforce and travelling public safe.

This is planned to take place during half term (February 17 to 21) to minimise disruption to schools and the road will reopen overnight outside working hours of 7.30am to 6pm. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained wherever possible.

Councillor John Woodman, Somerset County Council's Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "This is a busy location and the improvements are very welcome but it does mean some temporary disruption while we are working.

"We're doing our best to keep this to a minimum by planning most of the works for half-term and reopening the road outside of working hours."

A suggested diversion route suitable for all vehicles can be found via the red button below or will be clearly signposted on site. As with any road closure, drivers are free to find their own alternatives.

Somerset County Council looks after more than 4,170 miles of road and in 2018/19 invested £24.7 million to keep the county moving, including filling 18,519 potholes and delivering 385 highway maintenance schemes ranging from drainage works to carriageway and footway resurfacing.
