The Bishop's Palace Transforms into Open-Air Theatre, Showcasing Diverse Performances from Opera to Whodunnit
The Bishop's Palace in Wells is set to be the theatre under the stars once again, hosting a diverse range of outdoor performances for this year's summer season.
The performances take place on the South Lawn, where the remnants of the Great Hall from the 13th century provide an extraordinary backdrop, setting the stage for an unforgettable evening.
The season commences in June, as Opera Brava makes a highly anticipated return to the locale. Last year's spectacular performances still resonate, and they're presenting two beloved operas this year. The heart-rending tale of La Bohème (30th June), one of opera's most romantic pieces, traces the lives of four struggling bohemians on a transformative Christmas Eve.
In contrast, La Traviata (1st July) explores love's power and the societal hypocrisy that impedes it, in the tragic love story of Violetta and Alfredo.
Travel back in time with New Amen Corner on 20th July, as they resurrect the 80s at the Palace. Grab your Rubik's Cubes and leg warmers and prepare for a night packed with nostalgic tunes that promise to have everyone up and dancing.
On 23rd July, the acclaimed Lord Chamberlain's Men return with their rendition of the timeless and classic love tale, Romeo and Juliet. Witness Shakespeare's vision come to life as it was intended: an open-air performance, an all-male cast, and traditional Elizabethan costumes, music, and dance.
Returning favourites, The Pantaloons, are back on 3rd August with a faithful adaptation of Jane Austen's sharp-witted story 'Emma.' Join them once again on 9th August as they descend into the whimsical world of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland.'
Wrapping up the season on 18th and 19th August, Pinch Punch invites audiences to embark on a thrilling journey with their innovative show, Locomotive for Murder: The Improvised Whodunnit. An audience-driven plot unfolds on a train ride with four suspects and a renowned detective who must solve a murder before the killer strikes again. The identity of the murderer is entirely in the hands of the audience!
All theatrical performances begin at 6:30pm (Opera Brava commences at 7pm). Attendees are encouraged to bring along picnic blankets or low-backed chairs and their own refreshments.
