Thanks for the memories in Wells and South Horrington

Cash-strapped Somerset County Council is asking the voluntary sector to help them support people living with dementia and their carers.

They have given modest grants to two Wells charities because they can provide such services cheaper.

One has gone to the five-year Active Social Minds project run by Heads Up at South Horrington. This includes a range of memory workshops offering a range of different group activities including art, music, cooking and gentle exercise.

Another has gone to The Lawrence Centre (whose staff and volunteers are pictured) off Chamberlain Street in Wells which offers activities, lunch and social get-togethers for older people. The grant will help to pay for longer opening hours, the volunteer driving scheme, and refurbish the kitchen and furniture.

A free memory café is being held in Wells on the third Wednesday of the month.

The next one will be on July 17 from 2-4pm in the Methodist Church Hall, Southover, BA5 1UG.

"The cafe is a relaxed drop-in for people with memory problems and their carers or family," said the organiser, Claire Chettoe.

"Come along for companionship, information and advice, occasional talks, fun activities and a cuppa."

For further information phone Claire on 01749 676248 or email [email protected].
