The Swan Hotel in Wells, a landmark that featured prominently in the hit film Hot Fuzz, could soon undergo a fresh new look under plans submitted to Somerset Council.

Located on Sadler Street in the Wells Conservation Area, the Grade II listed building has applied for advertisement consent to modernise its signage, lighting, and overall branding. The proposals include illuminated lettering, a new projecting sign, directional signage for the reception and car park, and a decorative awning.

The application, submitted by Coaching Inns, outlines plans to refresh the building's appearance with a carefully chosen palette of heritage-inspired colours, including soft greys and pewter tones. The proposed updates aim to strike a balance between modern functionality and respect for the building's historic character.

The Swan Hotel has long been a fixture of Wells, with parts of the building dating back to the 16th century. Over the years, it has undergone various alterations, including a major refronting in the 18th century and the addition of a rear wing in 1885. Inside, the hotel boasts features like 16th-century moulded beams, cast-iron balconies, and vaulted stone cellars, all of which contribute to its historical significance.

The design and heritage statement accompanying the application argues that the proposed changes will not detract from the area's character. Instead, they are intended to complement the mix of historic and commercial buildings in the town centre.

The Swan Hotel has become a tourist attraction in its own right, thanks in part to its starring role in Hot Fuzz. In the film, it served as a key location in the fictional village of Sandford, drawing visitors from across the country who want to see the recognisable backdrop in person.

If approved, the updates will ensure the hotel remains a standout feature of Wells' town centre, while preserving its historic charm for future generations. Somerset Council is currently considering the application.
