By Laura Linham 29th Apr 2026
The first names have been announced for this year's Wells Festival of Literature, giving local book lovers an early look at the autumn programme.
The festival, which runs from 16 to 24 October, will bring writers, journalists, historians and broadcasters to Wells for nine days of talks and events.
Among the first names confirmed is journalist and broadcaster Stephen Sackur, best known as the former lead presenter of the BBC's HARDtalk. He will discuss Hard Truth, his case for independent journalism and truth-telling in an age of disinformation.
Also announced is geopolitical expert Arthur Snell, whose book Elemental looks at politics, climate change and the choices facing societies around the world.
The line-up also includes Amy Jeffs, bestselling author of Storyland, with Arthur – A New Life, her retelling of the King Arthur legends illustrated with 30 of her own linocuts.
Andrea Wulf will appear with The Traveller, a biography of 18th-century philosopher and naturalist George Forster, while archaeologist Dr Jess Venner will discuss The Lost Voices of Pompeii, which tells the story of the city's final day through the lives of seven citizens.
Elizabeth Golding is also among the first names announced. Her illustrated biography Holbein: Renaissance Master looks at the artist's life across Europe and his later years between London and Basel.
Profits from Wells Festival of Literature fund year-round literacy projects in local schools.
Festival Friends can receive discounted ticket prices and other benefits.
