Somerset’s biggest stories from across the county today

By Laura Linham   9th Dec 2025

Strong winds, safety warnings and fresh local stories shape today’s county round-up.
Strong winds, safety warnings and fresh local stories shape today’s county round-up.

Here's a county-wide look at the biggest stories shaping Somerset today, 12 December — from severe weather warnings and police crackdowns to planning updates and seasonal features.

Several weather warnings remain in place across the county as the Met Office forecasts heavy rain and strong winds overnight and into Tuesday. Gusts of 40–50 mph are expected widely, with 60–70 mph possible in exposed coastal or high-ground areas. Some places could see 20–40 mm rain, and even more over hills — raising the risk of flooding and travel disruption.

Avon and Somerset Police have made 62 arrests across the first week of December under their Christmas drink- and drug-driving campaign — a 31 per cent rise on the same period last year. Officials emphasised that there is "no safe way to drink and drive" and urged people to think of the knock at 3 am that no one wants.

Consumers are being warned to watch out for unsafe toys this Christmas. The Heart of the South West Trading Standards Service said bargain deals — particularly online — may conceal substandard or dangerous items. Buyers are urged to check for CE or UKCA safety marks, heed age guidance and check battery compartments and small parts before gifting.

A planning proposal has been submitted to transform land at Redcliffe Street, Cheddar, into a 0.4 hectare fenced dog-walking field. The plan includes access from Redcliffe Street, a small four-space parking area, and new hedgerows plus orchard planting. Residents can view the application via the council planning portal (ref 17/25/00082).

On a different note, the county's environment hit the headlines today as Mick Dunk — a councillor on Somerset Council — spoke out after being jailed for two years and two months over his part in a 2022 motorway protest by Just Stop Oil. He defended his actions, saying: "My conscience would not allow me to stand back and do nothing."

Finally — a seasonal piece of good news: the town of Frome has been highlighted in a recent travel feature as a cosy winter destination. With historic streets, independent shops and a lively Christmas market, it's being promoted as a top festive-getaway across Somerset.
