National Grid is urging Somerset households to prepare for possible power cuts as Storm Austen brings strong winds and heavy rain on Friday, 23 October. Residents are being asked to charge phones, keep a torch handy and check on neighbours who may need help.

The warning applies to National Grid Electricity Distribution's 1.6 million customers across the South West, including those in Wells, Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury and Street. The company says severe weather could damage the network and interrupt electricity supplies.

Teams will be monitoring the network and working around the clock to restore power if outages occur. The company says its preparations are aimed at ensuring staff can respond quickly and safely.

Amy Webb, chief operating officer at National Grid Electricity Distribution, said: "With Storm Austen approaching, our priority is to be ready for whatever the weather brings. We'll be monitoring the network closely and have teams ready to respond quickly and safely if there is any damage."

Householders are advised to charge mobile phones and battery packs before the storm arrives and keep a torch somewhere easy to find. National Grid advises against using candles or paraffin heaters during a power cut.

Residents should also monitor forecasts and check on vulnerable neighbours, friends and relatives. Anyone who relies on medical equipment at home should make sure it has a battery back-up, or contact their medical professional for advice if it does not.

Power cuts can be reported through National Grid's power-cut website or by calling 105 or 0800 6783 105. The appeal is a precaution ahead of the storm, rather than an announcement that supplies have already been affected.

People with additional needs can also register for support through the company's free Priority Services Register. National Grid is encouraging customers to prepare before the weather deteriorates.
