Police in Somerset have launched a month-long Christmas crackdown on drink and drug driving — with residents urged to report anyone getting behind the wheel under the influence.

The operation, launched on Monday, 1 December, will see Avon and Somerset Police ramp up roadside checks across towns and villages including Wells, Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet.

It follows a year of deadly collisions — with drink or drugs linked to 25 per cent of fatal crashes so far in 2025.

Officers say community intelligence, ANPR cameras and CCTV will all be used to target suspects. Members of the public are being encouraged to report offenders via the force website or by scanning a QR code being circulated.

Inspector Matt Boiles said: "There is no safe way to drink and drive – not at Christmas, not any day of the year. Even small amounts can seriously impair your judgement, reaction times and coordination."

One in four fatal crashes linked to drink or drugs

So far this year, police have attended 32 fatal collisions across Avon and Somerset. Eight involved drink or drugs — 25 per cent.

There have been 427 serious or fatal crashes in total in 2025. Fifty of those (12 per cent) had drink or drugs listed as a factor.

One man, aged 28, was arrested in January after crashing a Jaguar XF on the M5 between Bristol and Weston-super-Mare. He fled the scene carrying a bottle of spirits and was later tracked by a police dog. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink, and using a mobile phone at the wheel.

'You could save a life'

Clare Moody, Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner, said: "Any life lost to such reckless behaviour is one too many. If you know someone is driving under the influence, please report it."

Karen MacDonald from Crimestoppers added: "You can help put the brakes on regular drink and drug drivers by telling our charity what you know. It can save lives."

• Driving or attempting to drive while above the limit: up to 6 months' jail, unlimited fine, 1-year ban minimum

• Causing death by careless driving under the influence: life in prison, unlimited fine, 5-year minimum ban
