Somerset Day weekend returns on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 May, with dragon trail events, music, heritage and community celebrations near Street, Glastonbury, Wells and Shepton.

Somerset pride is about to take centre stage as communities across Street, Glastonbury, Wells and Shepton Mallet prepare for Somerset Day weekend.

The annual celebration takes place on Saturday, 9 May and Sunday, 10 May, bringing together flags, bunting, food, music, walks and family events across the county.

Somerset Day is a county-wide celebration of Somerset's identity, heritage and community spirit.

It is a chance for residents, businesses, schools, pubs, shops and community groups to fly the Somerset flag, dress streets in bunting and celebrate the places, people and traditions that make the county distinctive.

This year's programme includes everything from dragon trail stops and live music to heritage days, outdoor walks, food events and family activities.

For Street, one of the headline moments will be Dragon Stop 7 at Clarks Village Car Park 2 on Saturday, 9 May, from 2.30 pm to 4 pm.

The stop forms part of the Journey of the Dragon, a Somerset Day feature bringing family activities and food and drink to towns across the county.

Just outside Glastonbury, Avalon Archaeology at Westhay will host King Alfred and Somerset Day on Sunday, 10 May, from 10 am to 5 pm.

The event gives the weekend a strong local heritage flavour, with Westhay sitting on the Somerset Levels and close to Glastonbury's own rich historic landscape.

Wells will also have music around the Somerset Day period, with the Missouri Baptist University Chorale concert taking place at St Cuthbert's Church on Monday, 11 May, from 7 pm to 8 pm.

In Shepton Mallet, residents are being encouraged to join in by flying flags, putting up bunting and heading to nearby events across the Mendip area.

Organisers say Somerset Day is open to everyone, whether they attend an organised event, host a celebration of their own, or simply show their Somerset pride at home, work or in the community.

Full listings and details of how to take part are available at somersetday.com.
