As the festive season approaches, Somerset Council is calling on the public and employers to be vigilant for signs of domestic abuse, a hidden crisis that often intensifies during the holidays.

While Christmas is a time of joy for many, it can be a period of fear and isolation for those experiencing domestic abuse. Financial pressures, increased alcohol consumption, and the stresses of creating the perfect holiday can exacerbate abusive behaviours, making this time of year particularly challenging for victims.

Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Lead Executive Member for Communities at Somerset Council, said:

"Christmas is meant to be a joyous time, but sadly, it often brings a surge in domestic abuse cases. I urge everyone to educate themselves on the signs of domestic abuse and to be alert to them in the relationships of those around them when visiting family and friends this season."

Recognising the signs

Domestic abuse is not always physical. It can include emotional manipulation, financial control, or isolating someone from their support network. Somerset Council is encouraging people to look out for subtle signs, such as changes in behaviour, withdrawal from social activities, or signs of anxiety and distress.

Help is available

Somerset Council provides confidential and non-judgemental advice through the Somerset Domestic Abuse Service. Their helpline, 0800 69 49 999, is open daily from 8am to 8pm, including Christmas Day. The service also offers resources such as an employer's toolkit and the Somerset domestic abuse website, which are accessible 24/7 to assist individuals and organisations in responding effectively to abuse.

Support for those causing harm

The council is also highlighting that help is available for those concerned about their own behaviour. Recognising harmful patterns and seeking professional support is a critical step towards breaking the cycle of abuse.

Emergency assistance

In emergencies, individuals should always dial 999. Those who cannot speak safely can tap the phone and press 55 when prompted, enabling emergency services to locate them. Deaf, hard of hearing, or speech-impaired individuals can register with emergencySMS.net to send texts to 999.
