Motorists in Wells are being warned of a major road closure that will last nearly two months as part of a gas pipe upgrade in the Haybridge area.

Wales & West Utilities will close Haybridge from 25 November to 17 January as part of a project to increase the capacity of the gas network.

The work is essential to ensure a reliable gas supply to homes and businesses, but the closure is expected to cause significant delays for local traffic.

Traffic lights will also be in place on Wookey Hole Road and Glencot Road from 21 October to 29 November.

Simon Lee, who is overseeing the project for Wales & West Utilities, said: "We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We'll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

"While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across the wider area. Whether it's heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it."

Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys while the works are ongoing. The gas pipe upgrade is part of a larger effort to future-proof the gas network for greener energy options, such as hydrogen and biomethane.

For more information or questions about the project, motorists can contact Wales & West Utilities' customer service team on freephone 0800 912 2999.
