Hopes are high that Wells city centre's Post Office can be switched to a new venue without a break in service.

Wells City Council owns the current site in the Market Place and have agreed an extension to March 31 of the Post Office's lease, which expired in 2013, to allow them extra time to complete their move to a shop in the High Street.

"The Post Office informed the council the branch would be closing in September 2019," said Wells Town Clerk Steve Luck, "but they were persuaded to stay until January 2020 as two retailers had shown an interest in hosting a Post Office. Agreement has now been reached with one of the shops.

"In the meantime, the city council are in final discussions with a potential new tenant for the Market Place building who has been working with us to allow the Post Office as much time as possible to complete their move.

"The city council were disappointed in 2013 when the Post Office refused a new lease on the current building but by us all working together we hope the Post Office will transfer services to the High Street without a break."
