Wells police are calling on retail workers to prioritise their safety above all else when it comes to dealing with shoplifters.

They say that amid reports of retail workers being injured trying to prevent shoplifters, the prevention of shoplifting has become one of their top policing priorities.

The police emphasise that the health and safety of individuals are far more valuable than any stolen goods.

A spokesperson said: "Our main concern is the safety of our community. Shop workers urge you not to confront suspected shoplifters unless it's safe to do so. Remember, no item is worth your health or life."

In response to these incidents, Wells NPT has been circulating an NPT contact list to local shops and ramping up their patrol activity in and outside retail spaces.

Shop workers are encouraged to dial 999 immediately if they find themselves in a dangerous situation during a theft.

They can also contact the Wells NPT via the non-emergency number 101 or email [email protected] for further advice and guidance on handling such situations.

The police spokesperson added: "Don't hesitate to call 999 in case of an incident. And remember, we are also here to advise and guide in handling these situations."
