Police in Wells have arrested a young offender after a rise in shoplifting incidents in the city centre — with local businesses reporting a spate of thefts in recent weeks.

The neighbourhood policing team confirmed they were called to a local shop on 9 April 2025 following a report of theft. Officers identified a suspect and recovered the stolen item.

In a separate incident, another individual has been summonsed to court in connection with shop theft in Wells.

It comes after businesses in the city raised concerns about a rise in shop thefts — including some high-value items — sparking meetings between police and traders to discuss the issue.

Officers say they are working closely with local shop owners to explore solutions and prevent further incidents.

A police spokesperson said: "We have been engaging with local businesses in Wells City who have reported an increase in shop thefts.

"We would encourage anyone who experiences or witnesses a theft to report it by calling 101. Your cooperation is crucial in helping us tackle this issue and keep our community safe."

Police are continuing patrols in the city centre and say they are committed to supporting local businesses affected by crime.
