Police appeal for witnesses after man dies in A39 crash near Chilton Polden

By Laura Linham 1st Aug 2025

Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage after a man in his 80s died in a crash on the A39 near Chilton Polden on Thursday afternoon (31 July).

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 1:30pm following a collision between a black Citroen C4 Cactus and a Mercedes lorry. Despite the efforts of medics, the car's driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been informed and is being supported by a specialist liaison officer.

The road was closed in both directions between Ford Lane and Holywell Road for several hours to allow for emergency response and initial investigation work. It later reopened at around 10:30pm.

Avon and Somerset Police urged drivers to avoid the area during the closure, stating: "Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes." The crash caused congestion through Chilton Polden as traffic was diverted away from the scene.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant dashcam footage is asked to contact police on 101 and quote reference 5225216004, or use the online appeals form: https://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk.
