A plan for a new community hub to be built in Coxley along with eight new houses has been given the green light by Mendip District Council.
The application for outline planning permission with all matters reserved for the erection of eight dwellinghouses with a community hub on land north east of the former Pound Inn site, Main Road, Coxley, was submitted by Guy Roberts in conjunction with the Coxley Community Land Trust.
Guy and Sarah Roberts are giving the land to the trust for £1 so the community centre/shop/cafe can be created as an amenity for the village.
The proposal is to build a drop-in community hub catering for all ages of village residents and visitors, with particular attention paid to alleviating social exclusion and a place for teenagers and young families to meet.
The hub will include a shop, café, toddlers' play area, lounge, bar and a community activity space for skittles, pool table, darts and table tennis, etc, and as the project develops the trust hopes to include a restaurant at a later date.
The design and size of the housing part of the plan is yet to be decided, but the plans are for the homes to be at the west end of the site, on the side adjacent to the current housing on the former Pound Inn site, with the community hub site backing on to the River Sheppey.
