Wells High Street now has a one-way system in place for shoppers

As of today (June 16) a one-way system is operating for shoppers on the pavements in Wells High Street.

Shoppers will notice various signs up and down the high street informing and directing of which way to go and where to cross over.

The basic rule is "keep to your left" - keep to the left hand pavement, and refrain from walking in the middle of the road, which is still open to traffic.

A spokesperson for Wells City Council said: "There are no laws in place and no policing to ensure everyone follows this scheme, however we are encouraging residents and visitors alike to show community spirit by following the scheme, to help keep each other safe.

"We want this information to reach as many citizens as possible so please share this news."
