On Saturday, June 18, the streets of Wells will be full of bicycles as a mass cycling event takes place in the city.
It will be part of the next Wells Goes Green event – Wells on Wheels! – which is a collaboration between Wells City Council and the Sustainable Wells group.
The event will take place from 10.30am-2.30pm at the Recreation Ground.
The event will have a focus on cycling, as people are being encouraged to ditch their cars in favour of bicycles in a bid to reduce carbon emissions. According to IMPACT community carbon calculator, transport is the third-largest contributor to Wells' carbon footprint, so reducing the number of cars used for short journeys in Wells is a key step to the city becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
The mass cycle will set off from the Recreation Ground at noon, with participants following the mass cycle leader on a 20-30 minute ride around the city.
The purpose of the ride is to highlight the desire (and need) for better infrastructure in and around the city to encourage more cycling, and also to promote cycling in the city.
Also at the event will be Eco Move, Bristol with some electric bikes for you to try; Grand Tor Cycling will be on hand to demonstrate simple bike maintenance and repairs; LifeCycle will have literature and information on their schemes and financial aid; local councillors will be on hand at the Troubleshooting stand to discuss areas in Wells you believe need attention to improve safety and infrastructure for cycling and there will be an ice cream bike for refreshment (whether permitting); and more! Sustainable Wells are also organising a petition which will be sent to Somerset Highways asking for better cycling facilities in Wells and across the wider Somerset region.
