While many Wells residents have long-appreciated the beauty of their city, it seems increasing numbers of TV companies and film crews have also caught on - earmarking the area as a stunning backdrop for their lavish productions.

The BBC hit drama, Poldark, is one such recent production to showcase Wells locations including the Town Hall and Bishop's Palace, while the Sky One hit A Discovery of Witches recently filmed at Wells Cathedral.

Recognising the value film productions and organised community events bring to residents, tourism and the local economy, Mendip District Council has adopted a five-year strategy to identify, develop and promote future opportunities on Mendip land.

The new Event and Filming Strategy 2019-2024, will see external and internal partners working closer together.

It will ensure safety at events, streamline processes for organisers, set out pricing structures and provide support to local communities to help them run and manage events effectively, and sustainably.

Cllr Nick Cottle, portfolio holder for neighbourhood services, said: "By adopting the strategy, the council is recognising the significant contribution events make to the social fabric of communities.

"And that film productions not only promote the district, but have potential to boost tourism and the local economy too."

Leader of Mendip District Council, Cllr Ros Wyke, said: "We should encourage and celebrate events, and enjoy our location.

"But we must also provide people with clear processes - and always have common sense and safety in mind."
