A burger kitchen from Wells has scooped an award at the National Burger Awards 2023.

Fattso co-owner and chef, Hamish Macdonald, was handed third place after a cook-off at the competition in London last week.

Fattso, which is based in the car park at the Cheddar Valley Inn, first launched in 2020.

They were founded by Joe Watson and Charlie Morris Adams who were interested in the 'smash burger' scene coined in the United States, which sees the meat cooked on a flat top grill at high heat, served with different sauces and toppings.

They describe themselves as a 'small company with a big heart'.

Hamish was invited to the National Burger Awards in Islington, London, for a cook-off with some of the most respected burger chefs in the country, with his Royale with Cheese taking third place overall.

This year's impressive line-up included former two-time champion Nick Watkins from El Perro Negro, who claimed the National Burger of the Year title in 2019 and again in 2021. Bleecker, which won the awards in 2020

The event, headline sponsored by Brooklyn Brewery, took place on 22 February 2023 at Islington Electrowerkz in London.

In addition to the signature round, chefs took part in a technical show-down that saw them create a burger from a specific selection of ingredients supplied by event sponsors, in a bid to be crowned Burger Chef of the Year.

They also took part in a meat-free burger round sponsored by The Vegetarian Butcher., with the overall winners chosen by a hand-picked panel of esteemed industry judges, including former winners of the competition.
