Across Mid Somerset, residents gathered this morning to mark Remembrance Day with services held in Wells, Glastonbury, Street, and Shepton Mallet.

Hundreds of people came together at each location to honour the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces, both past and present, in ceremonies filled with respect and solemnity.

In Wells, the city's war memorial saw a large turnout as families, veterans, local dignitaries, and members of community groups assembled for the service. The air was thick with emotion as a bugler played the Last Post, a solemn note that hung over the crowd before two minutes of silence were observed. Local leaders and veterans laid wreaths, each one a symbol of gratitude and remembrance for lives lost in service.

In Glastonbury, the community gathered at the war memorial outside St John's Church for a reflective service that saw dignitaries, families and schoolchildren come forward to lay wreaths. A parade followed, led by veterans carrying banners, who were met with applause from the gathered residents as they passed through the town centre, a poignant reminder of the connection between Glastonbury's past and present.

In Shepton Mallet, the British Legion organised a march through the high street, with participants including veterans, cadets, and civic leaders. A mix of young and old joined in, from former service members to local schoolchildren, all there to pay their respects. As the Last Post played, the crowd fell silent, observing two minutes of stillness,

Street's commemoration took place during the afternoon, with a parade through the High Street and wreath laying at Merriman Park. At the end of the service, children from nearby schools laid handmade poppies at the memorial, a tribute to those whose legacy continues to be remembered by the youngest members of the community.

As wreaths were laid, banners held high, and the Last Post echoed through the towns, Mid Somerset's communities came together in unity, reflecting on the sacrifices of those who served and acknowledging the shared commitment to remember them each year. Today's Remembrance Day services reminded all present of the enduring importance of these acts of remembrance, ensuring that the sacrifices made by so many will not be forgotten.
