Mendip's ranking in the zombie apocalypse survival league tables - and why the numbers matter

By Laura Linham 26th Feb 2023

According to new research, you have a reasonable chance of surviving the inevitable zombie apocalypse if you're a Wells resident - but you might want to head to other places in Somerset if you want the best chance of survival.

But the somewhat silly angle does offer some eye-opening information about Mendip and how it compares to its neighbouring districts.

Mendip came in as number 127 on a list of 306 areas in the UK rated by housing platform Rentola, based on the possibility of surviving there in the unlikely event of the dead rising up to take over the earth.

But if you fancy your chances and think you could make the trek, Taunton and West Somerset came in as number 8.

The study was conducted using the most recent Office for National Statistics (ONS) data.

The cities and districts were ranked in the following six categories: vulnerability - based on population density, disability and mental health conditions; hideouts - based on the size of private outdoor space, supplies - information about the water supply; sewerage, waste management and the average distance to pharmacies.

Hazards was taken from air pollution figures, while safety was charted using information about reported crime. Meanwhile, the mobility ranking was based on transportation and road safety.

So while the data being pitched on the angle of a zombie apocalypse, the indices used paint an interesting picture of Somerset, where Mendip scored highly for access to supplies but lower in terms of everything else.

It also ranked below the neighbouring districts of South Somerset in all categories, Sedgemoor in everything apart from hideouts and North Somerset in everything other than mobility.

So while you might not be too worried about a zombie apocalypse, the figures certainly tell their own story.

The study also concluded that you are most likely to survive in Uttlesford in Essex and least likely to survive in Craven in Yorkshire.
