Meet the candidates hoping to represent Mendip Hills Division on the new Somerset Council
Elections for the new Somerset Council take place on May 5.
Here's who is standing in the Mendip Hills Division
Edric Hobbs - Liberal Democrats
"I am a son of Mendip, coming to Priddy in 1964 - where my parents still live now.
A keen cyclist, runner and walker, I still occasionally go caving. I helped start the local parkrun, a great free community event - I'm an Event Director and a Duke of Edinburgh Scheme Co-ordinator.
Road safety is my passion. I teach 'Bikeability' to mainly primary aged children and think this an important skill to learn early on - if we are to stay safe and help save the planet.
I went to Priddy school. When my children were at school, I served as a Parent Governor at both Stoberry and Wells Blue. I am a Mendip Councillor and for a time, chaired a local Parish Council.
You will often find me cycling round the Mendips and I'm always available for a chat, especially if I've just ridden up one of Mendip's steep hills!"
Tony Robbins – Liberal Democrats
"Tony has lived in Wells for more than 40 years. He and his wife own and run The Venue on South Street, and previously ran the fish and chip shop on St Thomas Street. Tony was first elected to the City Council in 2007 and has been re-elected four times. He is a former Mayor of Wells.
'As a local publican, I know what it's like to run a small business in rural Somerset. For years, we've delivered fish & chips across the area and up on the Mendips.
With many changes ahead, I want Parish Councils to benefit and local voices to be heard clearly when planning, licensing and other critical decisions are made.
Rural services must be improved. I'll work hard for you, supporting our village schools, shops, surgeries and pubs and making our public transport work far better. And I'll be badgering Highways to sort our danger 'hot spots', so we can travel more safely.'"
