Mayor of Wells hands over £30,000 to Scouts for Scout Hut refurbishment

The Mayor of Wells has presented a cheque for £30,000 to the 5th/7th Wells Scout Group, following a year-long fundraising campaign to support the refurbishment of their Scout Hut on Kennion Road.
Cllr Jasmine Browne surprised the group with the total during a visit on 23 April, after spending her term in office championing the work the Scouts do for young people across the city.
The money was raised through a series of mayoral events, including a concert at Wells Town Hall and Cedars Hall, a quiz night, and a collection at the Mayor's Civic Service of Thanksgiving. In addition to organised events, the campaign was supported by donations from members of the public, local organisations and several anonymous contributors.
Speaking after the cheque presentation, Cllr Browne said: "I'd like to thank everyone for this astonishing community effort to raise a record-breaking amount. Wonderful Wells!"
The Scout group will use the funds to carry out much-needed upgrades to their building, helping to ensure they can continue to provide a safe and welcoming space for young people in the area.
