Wells is marking the return of the Maestro Series, the ambitious concert programme that brings internationally acclaimed musicians to the city for performances and masterclasses. The next event, on 12 February, features renowned pianist Imogen Cooper, described by conductor Simon Rattle as "one of the greatest musicians England has produced."

First launched in 2025, the Maestro Series was designed to give audiences across the South West the chance to hear world‑leading artists without travelling to major cities. The initiative proved an immediate success, drawing listeners from across Somerset and beyond.

"We were overwhelmed by the response, and agreed to organise a second series without hesitation," said Alex Laing, Director of Music at Wells Cathedral School. "This year's programme offers something for everyone — from solo recitals and duos to string quartets and song, with instruments ranging from piano to saxophone. If classical music hasn't been on your radar until now, I'd encourage you to explore the programme."

All concerts are held in Cedars Hall, the award‑winning 250‑seat venue known for its exceptional acoustics and intimate atmosphere. Cooper has praised it as "one of the finest acoustics anywhere," while jazz singer Clare Teal, who performs in November, has called it "an utter gem of a venue."

The 2026 series opened on 22 January with a performance from cellist Guy Johnston, one of the leading musicians of his generation, alongside pianist Mishka Rushdie Momen in a concert that drew widespread praise.

"It was a truly wonderful way to start the 2026 Maestro Series," said Laing. "But Guy's work didn't stop there."

A hallmark of the Maestro Series is its close link with Wells Cathedral School's Specialist Musician Programme. Each visiting artist delivers a masterclass for the school's most advanced students.

During his visit, Johnston spent the day coaching four young cellists, offering rare insight from a world‑class performer. This educational element is central to the school's mission and helps maintain Somerset's reputation as a national centre for musical excellence.

"Our specialist music school is one of just five in the country," Laing said. "Many of our students are supported through the government‑funded Music and Dance Scheme, as well as scholarships, bursaries and charitable support. That ensures our criteria is talent, not the ability to pay school fees."

Tickets for the Maestro Series start at £30, with free entry for under‑18s as part of the school's commitment to making high‑quality music accessible to families across Somerset. Supporters can also get involved through sponsorship or Maestro Membership.
