A special postbox has been installed at the Mendip Crematorium so people can write to their loved ones after they have gone.

The post box, painted white with 'letters to heaven' inscribed on it in gold, allows those grieving to send letters and cards to their lost loved ones.

The idea was inspired by a nine-year-old girl in Nottingham, Matilda Handy, who successfully established a post box at her local cemetery so she could send letters to her late grandparents.

Martin Saunders, Business Leader at Mendip Crematorium said: "We welcome all visitors to Mendip Crematorium to post a letter to a loved one in our special 'letters to heaven' post box."

"We've found that writing letters to a loved one can bring a sense of healing to some bereaved families. Whether you want to write to a loved one on a special day or just because, I hope that our special post box at Mendip Crematorium can provide some comfort."

Mental health professionals confirm letter writing and journaling are healthy ways to process loss and confront grief, anger, and sadness.

The post box is available for all to use and is managed by the team at Mendip Crematorium.
