The Knights Templar were in Wells on Saturday for a special service at Wells Cathedral.

It was a Great Priory Family Service for "The United Religious, Military and Masonic Orders of the Temple and of St John of Jerusalem, Palestine, Rhodes and Malta in England and Wales and its Provinces Overseas."

The City of Wells first hosted the Knights Templar in 1980 when the Grand Master, Harold Devereux Still, remarked that his ancestor, Doctor John Still, whose tomb is in the Cathedral, had been Bishop of Bath and Wells from 1593 to 1608.

The service was sung by the Vicars Choral and Schola Cantorum with Parry I Was Glad and Bairstow Blessed City, Heavenly Salem.

According to legend, the Knights Templar was founded in 1118 AD to protect pilgrims heading for Jerusalem and the Christian Holy places, where the small band of warrior monks established a headquarters.
