The Three Wells pub, apiece of local heritage nestled between Glastonbury and Wells, is set to begin a new chapter.

Plans for redevelopment will breathe new life into the main building, converting it into two holiday lets, holiday lodges and a café and a shop.

Now White Acre Planning have revealed striking photographs showcasing the pub's derelict interior, a poignant contrast to its days filled with local banter and warmth.

The pub's storied past stretches back to its days as the Blue Bowl Inn, a name possibly inspired by the fabled Glastonbury Blue Bowl.

Recorded in the 1851 census with Joseph Churches as innkeeper, the establishment has been a constant through the town's history, despite its changing names. In the late 1970s, it embraced the mystique of Arthurian legend, becoming known as the Camelot Inn, and briefly as the Blue Bell, before acquiring the title of the Three Wells in April 2015 following a refurbishment.

Ownership over the years transitioned from the hands of local brewers to larger conglomerates, with each steward inscribing their narrative into the fabric of the pub. The transition from the Courage cockerel emblem to being part of Marston's empire is as much a part of its history as the tales shared over its counters.

The revamp to the Three Wells signalled a fresh start, but it was not to last, as the establishment closed again two years later, seemingly concluding its long history as a community gathering spot.

But in May 2018, it was sold once again, for £330,000.

There was a flurry of works, which stopped abruptly and in November 2020 the pub was put up for auction, fetching £276,000. Shortly afterwards a Change of Use planning application was submitted hoping to convert it to a mixed-use site providing two holiday lets, a café /shop and staff.

Those plans were approved last month and now the Three Wells is on the cusp of another transformation.

The proposed changes will turn the pub and its surrounding area into a destination for holidaymakers, offering lodges and a variety of amenities that represent a new direction from its traditional pub heritage.
