The former home of acclaimed British author John Le Carré, the mastermind behind classics such as 'The Looking Glass War' in Coxley is now on the market for a cool £1.9million.

This elegant Grade II-listed Georgian house in Upper Coxley, has captured the interest of architecture enthusiasts and fans of the late author alike.

With approximately 4,530 square feet of interior space, the house boasts a series of reception rooms, six bedrooms, and a separate one-bedroom cottage.

A thoughtful restoration process has beautifully maintained the original elements of the home while introducing modern conveniences. The exterior, now rendered in lime, sits in an almost four-acre plot featuring meticulously landscaped gardens and several auxiliary buildings, offering uninterrupted views of the serene Somerset countryside.

The house gained its claim to fame as the residence of John Le Carré, whose novels about espionage – from The Spy Who Came in From the Cold to Tinker Sailor Soldier Spy – were inspired by his career in MI5 and MI6.

He wrote his first novel, Call for the Dead, whilst commuting to the former's headquarters, dreaming up his most iconic character, the spymaster George Smiley on the train to Cold War-era London. Le Carré, meaning 'the square' was a pseudonym to conceal his identity.

After his novel-writing was exposed by another British agent, Le Carré resigned from the intelligence services in 1965 and moved to Coxley. It is believed that he penned 'The Looking Glass War' in the garden studio.

Le Carré's first wife, Ann, continued to live in the house, then known as Coxley Manor, following their divorce in 1971. The property changed hands in 2011, when its current owners bought it.

On the ground floor, there's a large kitchen, snug reading room, and conservatory offer sweeping views of the expansive gardens. Meanwhile, the first floor houses the spacious primary bedroom suite, along with two additional en suite bedrooms. Three more bedrooms and a large family bathroom reside on the second floor.

In addition to the main house, an independent cottage graces the eastern end of the property. The 1,017 sq ft cottage offers a separate entrance, sitting room, kitchen and dining room, guest bathroom, and en suite bedroom. It also features a private walled garden and separate access from Stoppers Lane.

Externally, the property flaunts an exceptional garden, rolling lawns, a formal flower garden, and almost four acres of grazing fields.

The sale of this historic house offers a unique opportunity for admirers of Le Carré's work and those appreciating exquisite architecture to own a piece of literary history, where the whispers of espionage and thrilling narratives still linger in the air.
