There were smiles all round at Crandon Springs Care Home in Wells, when Kelly's Donkeys Animal Shelter, based near Frome, paid a special visit.
Residents enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of animal therapy as a Shetland pony, donkey, goat, guinea pigs and rabbits trotted and hopped their way into the home, offering gentle company and prompting plenty of laughter and happy memories.
A standout moment came when a curious goat took a shine to resident and former farmer Neville, who was affectionately dubbed the home's Dr Doolittle after the goat responded to Neville by jumping up to see him face to face. "It made my day", Neville said.
Fellow resident Robert reflected on the donkey's important role during wartime, commenting on "what amazing, kind animals they are," while Betty, who ran a farm in Priddy for many years with her husband, loved petting the animals and reminiscing about farm life. Enid was delighted too, saying the visit brought back "lovely memories" of keeping guineae pigs.
Staff loved seeing the residents so engaged, relaxed and smiling throughout the afternoon.
Meg Cleal, General Manager at Crandon Springs Care Home, said: "What a special day! The animals brought so much warmth, conversation and happiness into our home, and it was lovely to see residents reconnect with cherished memories."
